Any one who would be interested in trying to establish a community radio for Prince Edward Island is welcome to join an open meeting October 29th 2002 at the CBC building in Charlottetown.

For more information go to www.RadioOnTheIsland.org

Community Radio PEI is in no way part of CBC. CBC was kind enough to lend one of their board rooms out for this meeting.

Free Venue Update, Saturday July 6.

OK, I have written and revised the letter to city hall over and over and here is what I came up with. I will be mailing it Monday July 8th. If you would like to add something or change something get back to me by Sunday night!

Here it is, the official letter.

-------------------------------

Mayor MacDonald and city council,

Over the last decade a lot of great independent bands have formed in Charlottetown. These bands have been featured at local shows at The Arts Guild, Basilica Recreation Center among other halls and centers in our city. As the popularity of underground music has grown in Charlottetown so has other social groups, this is making it very hard for youth to display their bands to the community as recreation halls are booked solid 95% of the time.

Youth in a number of other cities have had this same problem. These youth, along with their city government have come to terms and formed youth centers, or free venues as I like to call them. In most cases the cities would purchase a building and allow the youth to manage this facility, paying for utility and maintenance costs with event revenue, donations and sponsorship.

Over the last month I have been talking with a number of people from our community and they see the need to have a free venue in Charlottetown, for youth to build and display their talents. While talking to people a lot of great ideas have been brought to my attention. Along with having live concerts youth could have yard sales at this facility, run an independent record store during the day to sell local bands CD and merchandise and help raise money for the building. Other programs could be cooking classes, arts and crafts programs, local area network game play among endless possibilities. There is no denying that a free venue would do our city youth good for years and generations to come.

At this time I would like to request a public meeting for the youth of Charlottetown to voice their concerns to their Mayor and city council. The youth of Charlottetown would really appreciate the City of Charlottetown’s support on this issue. If a date for a public meeting can be established, feel free to write me back with the details.

Thank you for your time,
Andrew Chisholm and free venue supporters.

more on the free venue idea.

A few weeks ago I posted news about wanting to try and get a free venue set up in Charlottetown. Since my first mention of the free venue 9 people have signed up and offered their support, thanks to those who did.

If you would like more information you can check out the little website I set up at www.freevenue.cjb.net

Good night.

Halifax has the Pavilion, Summerside has Generation XX, other cities have free venues for youth. Charlottetown has? nothing...

What I want to see is a building set up for youth to put on shows. Each show will cost patrons $3.00 - $5.00. Half the money from each show will go in to a fund for the building to pay for heating and lights. The other half will go to the bands or the person doing the show. The City of Charlottetown can provide the building and pay the yearly taxes and hire some one to manage the building. But how do we talk the city into giving us an old downtown building? We have all seen how long it took the city skaters to get a park. We don't want to wait 7 years for a free venue. If you are interested in joining a group dedicated to lobbying the City of Charlottetown to help youth set up a free venue dedicated 100% to youth, please email me at andrew@preteamRecords.com or fill out this form www.preteamRecords.com/fv/contact.phpIf you join you will be expected to come to rallies and public meetings. An official plan is needed to present to city hall, so we need some one who is better at English them I am to write this plan. All youths should provide ideas for this building, such as locations, names and who should manage the building. Please support the free venue and join the cause today!

Provide your name, and email address. You will be emailed with more information when made available.

Also, ignore my shitty grammer!

Smash Racism 2002

Spat of PEI are playing at SR2002, but besides that great aspects, read on to find out more reasons why you should attend..

Between May 10th and 12th, 2002, East Coast Anti-Racist Action (ARA) will be holding a weekend full of festivities in Moncton, New Brunswick. This event, entitled 'Smash Racism 2002', is designed to mobilize and educate people from all over Canada and the United States who are attending, in order to bring about a better understanding on the problem of neo-fascism on the east coast, and how we can go about combatting it. Along with the workshops and speeches, there will be films, and three concerts throughout the weekend. By far though, the most important event will be the people's solidarity march through downtown Moncton, which will say "No!" to racist acts of intimidation and terror, and demand that law enforcement and city government pay attention and address these tragic marks on Moncton history. Here are only a few examples of what has been going on lately on this side of Canada involving racism and bigtory.

In the spring of 2000, Charlottetown, PEI Heritage Front organizer Dwayne Finlayson, and Nova Scotian neo-nazi friend Johnathan Petrie attacked 2 Japanese women and 1 Canadian woman of Japanese ancestry in the downtown core of the city. Smashing pizza into the face of one of them, they also shouted racist insults at them, and attacked a bystander who tried to intervene. Finlayson received a short prison sentence for this act, despite having over a dozen prior convictions.

This past summer an 18-year-old Moncton, NB neo-nazi James Frederick Hanley burnt a cross on the lawn of a black family. This act of terror, commonly used by the Ku Klux Klan, landed the long-time racist youth in court on hate crime charges, which he received a prison sentence for.

Racist posters giving contact information for a gang known as the Berserkers, or promoting the Heritage Front, were put up around the city of Moncton, NB in the summer and fall of 2001. The culprits behind these were Monctonian racists Mike Savoie and Marcel Prevost.

To read more racist acts that took place on our east coast, visit www.antiracistaction.ca/eastcoast

It is apparent from the information above that there is an unusually high level of racist activity on the east coast, and that isn't even all of it. The east coast is one of the major hotbeds for racist activity in Canada right now, with Moncton and Halifax being the two main locales for hate incidents.

We'd like to invite you to be a part of this great event to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism within the city of Moncton, and oppose acts of racial hatred and discrimination. People will be rallying at Bore Park on east Main Street in downtown Moncton at 11:30AM on Saturday. The march leaves Bore Park at 12:00 noon sharp for a rally location downtown, which will feature music, free refreshments, and speeches. Bring your friends, your solidarity, noise makers, banners, signs, and whatever else you'd like to use to show that you and your group are in support of safe, racism-free streets in Moncton.

If you'd like to speak to a representative beforehand, we'd be very welcoming of that as well. We're a grassroots, community-based, street-action organization. There are dozens of chapters of ARA across the world, from Canada to Argentina. You can also find more information at our website, location on the web at www.antiracistaction.ca/eastcoast

Please don't hesitate to contact us at eastcoastara@canada.com if you have any questions, as we'd be more than happy to answer them. When you roll into Moncton, be sure to go to 99 High Street, which is the location of Forester's Hall, which opens at noon on May 10th (Friday) and will be the convergence centre for the weekend.

PEI Locals now has an MP3.com Radio Station. If you would like to check out the radio station go to, www.mp3.com/stations/peilocals. Right now there is only a few bands listed, but be assured, I would like to add all of Prince Edward Island's great bands on the station. Having said that, if your band is from P.E.I and has an MP3.com page, email me the band name, and song you would like featured on the station along with a comment or web address, and I'll be happy to add it to the station. If your band does not have an MP3.com page and would like one, well you can make one for free at MP3.com. It takes about 2 weeks to be approved.

Also, every one should go to SR2002 in Moncton next month. It's a great cause, and well... Spats playing, so thats another good reason to go. :) http://www.antiracistaction.ca/eastcoast/ For more info.

***mp3.com has been messing up over the past couple of days. So if you try going to the radio and it don't work try back later. Also, I added a bunch of bands, some have not showen up yet but once mp3.com is working right there is 9 bands up.***
