Night Danger
MILKS & RECTANGLES are an indie rock 'n roll band who write anthems and dance-pop and sound like they might be British but are certainly from early 90s. They are from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where they live in king house and wear king hats.
Milks' first EP was ranked 9th on Herohill's list of their favorite Canadian EP of 2009, and "Slander Debunked" ranked 10th on i(heart)music's 'Best songs of 2009.' Milks' single from their second EP was ranked 4th on CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos' Strombo show.

It’s likely that few thought Fredericton’s newest great acoustic pop band would be born from the collaboration of members of the New Brunswick capital’s metal scene. However She Roars! came about in just such a fashion.
She Roars! started to develop when singer/guitarist Max LeBlanc and drummer Kyle Clark, who had played together in Modern Machine moved into a house together and quickly started putting together ideas on how to express their music in a more melodic fashion. Not long after, the two recruited bassist Chris McIntosh, formally of The Sea Divides.
The trio, who have been friends since middle school, wasted no time putting the finishing touch on a batch of songs which would go onto appear on a five-song self-titled EP recorded by Brad Perry and self-released in 2008. The band soon evolved from a side-project into the main focus of the band members. In an attempt to lay claim as not only great songwriters, but captivating live performers, She Roars! took the title of Fredericton’s King of the Stage winners in 2008.
The five songs that appeared on the EP showed a band that can not only write a catchy acoustic pop tune, but also leave the listener with something to think about. LeBlanc writes about everyday observations and uses interesting storytelling to explain and delve into life’s simplest ideas.
Most importantly, though, She Roars! are just having fun. It just so happens that they’re also really good at getting others to do the same.
Come have a pint with us

TONIGHT AT THE ALIBI LOUNGE 9:30PM EARLY SHOW
APOLLO GHOSTS W/ NORTH LAKES
Like a magnet attracts metal, Vancouver, British Columbia draws kindred souls from across the islands and upper mainland to its informal musical heart. So it did occur in 2008 when Adrian Teacher, Amanda Panda and Jay Oliver found themselves standing before an ominous looking door on East Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver, drawn from their childhood homes in points north. Looking for a practice space for their band Apollo Ghosts, they had been tempted by the off-kilter chiming sounds coming from the second floor windows and decided to inquire with the landlord.
This studio soon became their home (not literally, landlord!) and they began a strict regimen of practice, record, go to a show, eat, sleep, begin again. At the conclusion of this intense period of punk conditioning, they were rewarded with a gust of tunes that became Hasting Sunrise and its follow up EP, Forgotten Triangle. A full course of tender truth, intellectual sing-along and lo-fi charm, their initial offering was hailed by influential NYC blogger Ryan Catbird as his “favorite thing to listen to all throughout the year.” Discorder Magazine called the group one of the best Vancouver bands of the decade. Despite selling out of their initial run of vinyl records, Exclaim Magazine still described them as “criminally under-hyped.”
But local heroism can only get you so far and now the Apollo Ghosts stand ready to stun the world with Mount Benson. An ode to the hard-scrabble city of Nanaimo, BC, Mount Benson divulges the dark secrets of this luckless Vancouver Island town, a demystification on par with revealing the Masonic Handshake. Is the song Wakesiah just a tribute to a street above a former coal mine or really about a former lover? How dangerous can it be to swim in Witchcraft Lake? Who are the Sons of Norway? Is this all actually a ploy to reveal why former eccentric mayor, Frank Ney, wore pirate suits and rode in bathtubs across the Strait of Georgia?
Stumbling upon the Apollo Ghosts (www.myspace.com/adrianteacher) is a reward akin to finding a twenty dollar bill in an empty parking lot. You’ve just won the cosmic lottery!

Somehow, The North Lakes emerged.
Perhaps carried out from the forests in the arms of a Canadian winter. Maybe by washing up on the shores of their native Charlottetown. Surely, though, these sons and daughters are developing their own sounds rooted in folk, blues and pop traditions that will make you smile or tap your toes. Maybe even both! With hearts as big as their aspirations, be sure to investigate any recordings at they find their way to your ears (Their new full length album COBRA) and any live performances as they stumble into your town.

They play country tinged indie rock n' roll.
They play in other bands too.
They borrowed their name from Spoon.

Milks & Rectangles' first release Civic Virtues was produced by Daniel Ledwell of In-Flight Safety, and received the following praise:
"On ['Heart's The Target' and “Slander Debunked'], it's awfully hard to listen to Civic Virtues and not feel as though you're listening to the next big thing from the East Coast."
— i(heart)music (“Slander Debunked” selected as #10 of 'Best songs of 2009')
"Milks & Rectangles' take on across-the-pond boomers is quite enjoyable and polished for a debut effort ... If you told me this EP was from a group of seasoned vets playing overseas, I wouldn't blink an eye. "
— Herohill (Civic Virtues listed #9 on year-end 'Favorites '09: Canadian EPs')
BOXER THE HORSE
Finding its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, what began as a folk duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Gaudet and bassist Richard MacLeod eventually grew into Boxer The Horse with the addition of drummer Andrew Woods and Isaac Neily on guitar and keys. Together for two years, the four almost 20-somethings have been performing around the east coast and have made stops at the Halifax pop explosion and played a showcase at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton.
Racoon Bandit are a folk-rock quartet quickly gaining steam in the non-steam era. Started from story-driven acoustic songs, the full band maintains poetic lyrics with a driving rhythm section and gripping guitar flashes.
The Charlottetown, PEI group formed in late '08 in a well-lit porch. Nominated in 2010 for 3 Music PEI awards, including Best Group, the bandits play often and have shared the stage with great artists such as English Words, Erin Costelo, Jon McKiel, Wax Mannequin, Grass Mountain Hobos, Mardeen, Two Hours Traffic and Said the Whale.

Montreal's beloved six-piece, THE UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL, have wowed audiences from coast to coast with the infectious draw of their unique brand of blue-collar alt-country. A potent mix of blues, jazz, country and swing, The USWM’s live performances are filled out with dry wit, tall tales and some outright lies. Dancing is optional but hard to avoid.
Following in the wake of their critically acclaimed albums, Broken Trucks and Bottles and Kerosene & Coal, THREE ON THE TREE sees the band branching out from their earthy, acoustic-country-punk roots to experiment with gospel (Jesus We Sweat), historical ballads (Mary Gallagher), Spanish horn arrangements (Glen Jones) and thundering premonitions of death (Three Hard Knocks). Lead singer Gern f., guitarist Shawn 'Gus' Beauchamp and electric guitar master Matthew Watson each pour a diverse helping of tunes into the mélange. Rockabilly bassist Eddy Blake and banjo/mandolin player Chris Reid's combined upbeat, energetic stylings give the album an unmistakable pop and swing. Huge in heart, narrative scope and emotion, THREE ON THE TREE swoops down over the industrial grimness of Shot Tower sashaying through the street-level social turbulence of What a Riot and peers into a delicate room where lead singer Felicity Hamer's velvety vocals balance the melody of Little Girl like a frail tea-cup on her saucer. All of the most loved conventions of The USWM's previous work are represented, from the stirring rallying cries of Rise Up and The Line to light hearted foot stomping romps like Making Babies and Lorelei.
The United Steel Workers of Montreal were voted Montreal’s #1 Folk/Roots Band and #2 Best Live Act, and have been recorded live by CBC Radio 1, 2 and 3. The band has been receiving critical acclaim, playing SXSW, NXNE, CMW, Pop Montreal, Toronto International Film Festival, Festival de musique émergente, Quebec City’s 400th anniversary, Ottawa Bluesfest. Berlin’s Popkomm, Nancy France Jazz Festival and received nominations for the Quebec Independent Music Awards and the MIMIs. They have released two stunning videos for Émile Bertrand and Meaner than You. THREE ON THE TREE will be unleashed upon a rapidly swelling international audience, all hungry to hear more, and will see the band touring extensively across Canada, the US and Europe.
The USWM will be supported by local act Red River - a new country/folk ensemble fronted by Charlottetown singer/songwriters Drea Macdonald and Ted Simmons, accompanied by Eric LeClair (fiddle) and newcomers Matt Amond (guitars, vocals), John House (bass).

MILKS & RECTANGLES and the inspirational slowgun: Overcoming persistence. Exemplified in them, and music, and longterm goals: levitate the Pentagon w/ incantation, being on television.
Jenn Grant who is playing in PEI Jan 30th also sings back up vocals on "Slander Debunked" by PEI's "Milks & Rectangles". Milks & Rectangles will be playing Jan 29th at Charlottetown's Babas Lounge. New Royalty "brings the dance ruckus. A product of Ritalin medication, free beers and blood, sweat and tears that taste like P.E.I. potatoes. New Royalty romper-stomps like Russel Crowe and defines public policy like N.W.A. Anne of Green Gables was a silly girl with red hair, New Royalty are the crowned kings of Prince Edward Island" -- stereophonic.com

This is it. The final installment of cheap booze and cool tunes under the Piazza Joe's roof. Its been a good run, with some great bands, but due to extraneous circumstances the series will be discontinued.
That being said, we will be signing off in style -- The ultimate Rock n Roll at Piazza Joe's will feature the post-punk personality of Milks and Rectangles, as well as pre-punk poets Boxer the Horse.
Things will kick off as always around 10:30 with Ian MacDonald and be followed up by top notch sets by Milks the Boxer.
One last time... for the glory of cheap booze and even cheaper artists.
